On Tuesday March 6,2012 a small collection of High Plains AVA wine growers started the formation of the High Plains Wine Growers Association. This representative group of growers felt the need for an organization that would focus on promoting wine grapes grown in the High Plains AVA.
High Plains Winegrowers is organized to promote awareness of the superior quality of High Plains wine grapes, to advance community awareness of the central importance of the wine grape industry to the local economy and to the quality of life on the High Plains of Texas, to assure a healthy social and political environment conducive to grape growing and winemaking, and to strive to maximize the quality of High Plains grapes. High Plains Winegrowers is a privately funded Texas Non-Profit organization.
Goals
The primary goal of the High Plains Winegrowers is “To promote awareness of the superior quality of High Plains Wine Grapes.”
Other goals are:
- Educate consumers on the superiority of High Plains wine grapes. Consumers need to know what types of wines are made from High Plains fruit, where to buy them and how to support the High Plains economy.
- As an association, we want to convey to farmers, banks, agricultural businesses and others that wine grapes are a great crop for them to grow. We need to show others that wine growing is a profitable and sustainable crop on the High Plains.
- Serve as mentors and actively promote wine growing to prospective farmers. Wine grapes consume less water than most rotational crops. More farmers will need to expand their crop portfolio and wine grapes can achieve a profitable level without heavy watering and large amounts of land.
